The Westside Boogie Jacket
This jacket is custom made to fit the album rollout for Westside Boogie’s album titled “More Black Superheroes.” The album is divided into three different personalities, and “Aight” (the song featured in this jacket) personifies the energy of the “up to no good” energy trait. The design features the superhero character used in the promo for the album rollout, and a original character draped over the other.
The design language was intended to hold the same level of contrast that a collage would hold. The characters are at the front, part of the clouds of smoke slide in-between the them to create an illusion of a layer, and then the second layer are one coloured opaque smoke rendered behind the characters to compliment them without drawing the eye to a different destination, and the third and softest is the typography.
In the details of of the design it was important to use loads of movement with simple shapes to create pockets to breathe. Westside Boogie being a musician who focuses on internal struggle and his relationships, the emphasis was to keep the jacket grounded and have a unifying darker colour palette that led the eye to the relationship of the two characters. In songs like “Aight,” the lyrics lean into the the reckless parts of himself, which led to the choice of the emotions reflected in the the Westside Boogie character.
